Multi-touch DJ platform… er… desk
Holy Minority Report Batman!! This thing is incredible! Virtually a multimedia performance in itself, it’s visually pleasing and the audience gets to watch how you mix (trainspotters rejoice!). And there’s the added benefit of knowing your favorite DJ is *ahem* actually DJing. Not like that ever happens or anything… We won’t name names.
The software running is Traktor Pro with Emulator and the device is a DIY multitouch screen called Töken.
I searched the interwebs for more info about this Töken concept with little results. If anyone knows who built this thing, holla!
I think I saw one at Communikey this year; at least it was very similar. It was basically a big piece of glass with a projector and a special camera that could sense the touch movements. There was some open source program that ran the whole thing.
Christina… these are actually not too terribly difficult to build heres all the links Ive saved =) Basically its frustrated IR LEDs mounted on the side of a piece of acrylic. There is a compliant surface which you project onto from the rear. The motion i tracked with a webcam with the IR filter removed. When fingers touch the compliant surface it puts pressure on the acrylic and you can see ‘blobs’ on the webcam. there are different libraries for the blob detection and for using the multitouch as controls.
heres all the links Ive saved in my research. I have an aquantance who builds these for a living and in the near future I plan on picking his brain about good compliant surfaces. =)
Heres the video that started the multi-touch craze
