Señor Coconut to play Mutek 2010
This week Mutek announced a major addition to the 2010 festival line-up, Señor Coconut, resulting in me being *officially* distraught I won’t be blissfully romping around Montreal… for the third year in a row. But for the rest of you, there’s a couple special treats! Uno (or shall we say ein?), the aforementioned project of Uwe Schmidt (also known as Atom Heart). Schmidt is one of the world’s most respected electronic musicians and a longtime acolyte of the Mutek Festival. Best known for his 2000 album El Baile Alemán, in which he rendered nine classic Kraftwerk singles in Latin styles such as cha cha cha, merengue, and cumbia, Señor Coconut And His Orchestra have become a popular live act featuring nearly a dozen musicians and crowd-pleasing electrolatino music. His 2008 album Around The World featured his special take on electro-pop hits from the likes of Daft Punk, Eurythmics and Prince.
Segundo, (remember that other special treat?) Mutek is debuting Mister Coconut as the very first free outdoor showcase—right in the heart of downtown Montreal. Not to be confused with Piknic Electronik, this free event will take place at Place des Festivals in the Quartier des Spectacles on Saturday, June 5th at 9pm. I will be there in spirit, but you should be there in the flesh.
